I know it is typical to receive chocolates or simple gifts for Valentine's Day, as it the custom, but did any others receive larger gifts from an unknown source?

That is a relief to know, but it is not the grand search you may be thinking of. I asked here and nothing more.

[He wasn't thinking a grand search per se, just the fact that Seiji felt he had to know at all. Anonymous gifts apparently lead to a search for the gifter more often than not, as he was learning.]

[It's a question for two reasons. 1) Does it count as broken when only the screen is damaged? 2) What does that have to do with the conversation at all?]

Is the cracked screen why the letters are are in the upper case?

[Seiji also had never texted more than two word responses until getting his new phone before the start of the semester so he is not a good judge of what is normal for text communication.]

If you prefer doing so you need not stop because I was unused to it. I am still learning. It is different when communicating in English than in Japanese when such differences do not exist.

It is how English emphasizes loud speech and yelling. I do not know why it became thus, but that is how it is interpreted in their writing conventions.

Japanese is much simpler in terms of how words are written.
