Picking the target of your punch is as important as the technique in some ways. Striking someone in the mouth is an impulse people have, but it's generally not a good idea. Either the chin, throat or eyes are better. A thumb in the eye is especially effective and I highly recommend it. Even if it fails to connect, the psychological effect on the opponent is often significant.
