Depends on what you're looking for, but find an actual weaponsmith and buy directly from them. Many sites that sell 'swords' are selling replicas that are too heavy, or flimsy 'fantasy' blades.

Would it be too much to assume there's an actual weaponsmith in town?

The former will be unbalanced and will either swing badly or tire you out quickly, the latter will at best be flying debris if it hits anything harder than a pillow.

There is one in fact, though you can also ask the Anvil of Hadur's workers here. Most of them specialize in runic work, but many are smiths proper.

It's not going to be expensive, is it? I had been kind of thinking of getting one second-hand because it's not like I have loads of cash to throw around.

That's kind of the problem. I don't really know what kind of sword would be best, or if that's even the kind of weapon I want to go for in the first place.

From the Anvil it should be covered by student expenses. Outside will depend on what you're asking for and the length... you're close to my height, so depending on the style, you might need a slightly longer length.

There's some expectations of equipment needing to be replaced - I had an unfortunate run in with an Outland monster that rusts up metal by touching it on my very first mission here.

Have you figure out what kind of sword you're looking at?

Not everyone can be a badass. My only real dream is I make it through this whole thing alive.

In that case, it may be best to experiment with a few on loan before you commit. You may not even want to take up swordswomanship long term. When it comes to choosing an ideal weapon, it's best to select it based on your combat psychology.

Personally, I prefer to shoot things.

If I knew that I'd probably have looked into getting a weapon way earlier...

And I'm not sure. I've only tried out the practice swords available here, haven't really gotten to the real blade stage yet.

I don't know what my combat psychology would be. My experience with combat so far is a few spars in the Cage.

I'd probably be awful at shooting things.

Runes would probably be a good idea no matter if I'm punching or not, honestly. Can't say I really know much about them, asides "runes good".
