At what point does something get the right to be called a person? What do they need to do to deserve that?

[He laughs, too, happy to hear it even if he doesn't exactly get it. It sounds genuine, which pleases him more than the words themselves, and the little markers of insecurity help to make the doubts lighten up on his heart even more. Heh. He's already feeling great, and they've only just started.
