A "meme" is kind of a thing that gets passed around a bunch of people and altered to convey some kind of meaning or feeling. It's kind of an emotional meaning rather than an objective one. Usually humor, but not always.

And a "shitpost" is a low-effort post that's often a meme itself, usually meant to troll people.

...I never had to actually explain this before to anyone and it took like twenty minutes to figure out how I even could.

No, it's more of... make fun of or to provoke a negative response from someone for their own amusement.

There's no eating involved, despite bringing up trolls. Don't ask me where the phrase comes from, I don't actually know.

Sometimes. And sometimes it's meaner than others. Sometimes it's done because... well, they might not know better, or there's a miscommunication.

I haven't run into too many times where it was meant with actual malicious intent here. But that's not to say it doesn't ever happen, either.

The nuance is kinda hard to figure out without experience and knowing the people involved.
