un: likesflowers | late night thoughts about mortality with a ten year old

[ This post shows up at one of those 'no reasonable person should be awake at this time' hours, like 4 in the morning. ]

If you knew you were going to die

How would you feel? what are you meant to feel?

[ Vivi is not even remotely tech-savvy enough to know how to conceal his identity, so this is a great look into his mental state right now.

Which is to say: not good.

I do know I’m going to die.

And it fills my every waking moment with dread, consciously or not, which lurks within me and is the primary influencer of all decisions. The void calls, and we must answer with a scream of terror.

But that’s everyone, I think.

That is one of two options. You can face the reality of your inevitable non-existence or you can not, but all the same, it will decide your fate and choices. I remain conscious of the fact at all times because I see the evidence everywhere, but everyone knows it from their first thought. Ultimately, it's the only thing that truly matters.

Even if we presume we will prevent Night Fall, even things we consider permanent in our limited world view will disappear in the blink of an eye. The bees are dying, setting off a chain reaction ending entire ecosystems, mountains will be worn down by oceans, oceans will be evaporated by global warming, the globe by internal cooling and the dwindling magnetic field, asteroids, solar flares, rogue black holes, even if we avoid that nothing changes the fact the sun is on a count down of its own. As is every other star in the universe, so there is nowhere to flee that would be more than temporary shelter, like a paper sheet in a rainstorm. Annihilation occurs on the sub-atomic level everywhere, all matter, all energy, all life is heading towards nothingness. Even life in its most advanced forms is doomed to non-existence so we must ask why bother to do anything when existing is inherently meaningless when every achievement will vanish in time's gaping maw. The universe cares not, because the universe cares about nothing- everything that seems alive is ultimately inanimate on the deepest level.

So it's important to think about what matters to you, because it's meaningless to the indifferent universe.

I like cheese, personally. I think about what I need to do and when it's done, I reward myself with cheese.
