With all of the extra time due to the break, I'm looking for new projects. Apparel, mechanical devices, weaponry, etc. I'm also willing to research spells or other topics.

If it's for personal use, I'll work out a price of some sort but equipment for use in serving the academy's goals I don't see any reason to take from people when it benefits us all anyway.

You don't necessarily need to know what you want- if you've just got a problem, creating a solution would be my part of the process.

That's fine- I've plenty of experience to draw on in your stead. I'll work on something more universal.

Do you have any hobbies, interests or special skills in general?

Okay.

I used to run track - still run a lot, honestly. I've taken up knitting and a bunch of craftsy hobbies now, like cross stitching and crochet. I just like things that keep me busy.

Most notable thing is probably the speed, though.

As fascinating as the concept is, I think I'll refrain from creating a combat knitting needles. For now.

But a suit for emphasising speed could have practical applications. And actually, piercing weapons would benefit a great deal from that so maybe needles, though not knitting needles as such, would be a suitable supplement.

[ His first version might literally feature combat syringes. He gets carried away and gets stuck on themes a little when he's making new stuff. It's how Maya ended up with an owl themed stealth suit for basically no reason other than it being cooler that way. ]

I dunno, they can be pretty dangerous!

If they scale exactly in size to danger in comparison to sewing needles, I would certainly be nervous in their vicinity.

[ His hands are basically one big callous by now but somehow a sewing needle can get right through it all and jab him directly in the pain receptors. ]

A few. I think the shoes will need the most attention. I haven't designed anything really special for footwear before.

They're not as sharp as sewing needles, but with enough force you could probably puncture someone real good.

[Or real bad, depending on how you look at it.]

Well, you did say you tend to learn stuff when you make things for other people, so this is like that, yeah?

Exactly like that. Even just the cursory investigation has revealed a few things to me. Should be quite interesting.

Are you going to share what you learn, or is it just going to become another trick up your sleeve?

I'm not sure I'll be creating anything new in terms of footwear, just learn how to apply what is already known. But if I do, I'll write a paper on it for you.

I do sometimes find that as I can apply knowledge from other fields and produce unexpected outcomes.

Though if magic is required, I won't be able to sell it to Nike. Alas.

You might be able to sell it to some mages. Some of them might pay big bucks for fancy magic shoes!

You should get something for all the work you do, at least.

I wonder if there is a mage Olympics. I know a lot of mages are surprised when I use physical skills in conjunction with magic.

Contributing to preventing everyone from dying is more than enough reimbursement, I think. It's why I'll only accept payment for personal projects.

I don't know if it's quite to that level, but I did hear this place puts on tournaments for the students. That might be as close as we're gonna get.

I know, you already said that. But you should still get something out of working yourself to the bone. I mean I guess right now you don't really have to pay bills or rent or anything, but. Still.

That could be interesting, at the least. It'd be interesting to see people's strengths and weaknesses in action. I could develop all sorts of equipment there.

That's the crux of the matter. My needs are met by the school and my wants are simple- primarily, they are to further our goals as best I can, anyway.

It'll be fun! Probably the closest thing we'll get to showing off that's not incredibly dangerous, just mostly dangerous.

Is that really the appeal of a tournament? I thought it was more for personal development or satisfaction.

I don't think there's much more to want than not dying.

There's a lot of appeal to a good old fashioned competition. Depends on how much you care about winning and how much you care about betterment.

There's a difference between living and surviving. You can enjoy stuff too, you know. It's not gonna wreck your plans.

I've never seen the attraction to participate. Seems rather pointless. I'd just observe.

What I enjoy most is learning anyway, so it's two rabbits with one bullet.

I'll probably participate in it. I might not do well because I'm new to all of this, but it'll be fun to see what they throw at us.

I guess so. Still, taking breaks helps!

It would depend on what sort of restrictions would be applied- though considering the standards here I'd imagine not many. The school encourages us to reach our full potential, at least.

Exactly my thoughts- the literal least degree of restraint would be ideal. Rory Miller, in the book Meditations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real World Violence, stated that there is 'a flaw in training.' By that, he meant that when practising and sparring, you will be lacking something as you will be not be attempting to kill or disable your partner as you would in a real battle. Yet it is not practical to disregard that deliberate flaw completely, for obvious reasons. A problem to meditate on indeed.

That's a bit of an exaggeration.

You just have to learn not to hold back, don't you? If you're fighting to survive won't that come to you naturally? Nobody really wants to die, so the best would come out anyways, right?

[Adelaide has no idea. She's never really been in a fight before, much less a fair one. She's not really keen on fighting to the death, though she does admittedly have the advantage of already being mostly dead.]

That's not quite accurate. When the inexperienced enter a battle to the death, they'll often lose their composure and start to rely on instincts- which are generally untrustworthy. Those with sports combat experience will sometimes find that holding back has become a part of their movements- plenty of people who learn to fight in dojos will enter a fight, knock an opponent down and drop their guard because in a match that would be appropriate. Fighting, sparring and killing are only superficially similar because they used comparable skills. To most, killing does not come naturally.

[ He chooses not to make a comment about the whole 'born of the battlefield' thing and how he doesn't fit into that 'most' because of it. It actually disturbs him how little killing disturbs him now, especially as the standards for justifying it seemed to slide lower every day until recently. ]

Anyway, I'll admit to a certain degree of overzealousness occasionally, but not to the degree you describe.
