Hey Ive got an open question for you all: Why do you go on the super optional death missions?

Ive been on them too because...Nightfall is everyones problem and since I can do some stuff normal people cant I kind of felt like I had to? But I never signed up to be a soldier I signed up to be a student. I got all this training to be a human blender and I got this cool daemon horn sword but

I hate knowing how to kill people and I hate that I know what it feels like to be stabbed

I dunno maybe I want to see if Im just being selfish. Might delete this in the morning

I know we technically have a choice. But if no one chose to fight, all would perish. And if I didn't volunteer regularly, I would fail to live up to what I endeavour to be.

Perhaps so. With all that's been happening as of late... You lived as a civilian before all this. Of course it would be harder on you, too. If you need to rest, we shall continue in your stead.

There are many who would agree with you. Most Candles were civilians, too. Perhaps I can't understand it myself, but that kind of adjustment is a harsh one.

My family have been Hunters for centuries. I only wish to live up to that legacy, even if it may prove difficult. We have a responsibility to the world.

Because a very long time ago, my ancestor opposed a vampire who would do others harm, and in doing so ran afoul of both humans and daemons. Using a weapon forged from the soul of someone he couldn't save, he took up the mantle of Hunter to set things right as best he could.

[It's text, but it feels recited from memory, something she's heard many times before.]

Those who came after him followed first because we blamed ourselves. Then because we had no choice; as we fought the darkness, we were feared for contact with it. We were exiled. Excommunicated for at least a few centuries, until the situation became so bad that we were called by those who had pushed us aside. And then, it became clear that even as we claimed victory, it would never be eternal. Evil would always rise up again, and it followed that so must we.

That's what I inherited from my brother and my parents and their parents, going back to the 11th century. But whatever you make of yourself, you are the first of it. It would follow that you forge your own idea of your responsibility to this world, would it not?

Perhaps. But when I try, it comes back to this. I cannot leave the world alone. It is my fate and my responsibility. For my birth and what power I have, yes, but also, I cannot in good conscience leave this world to its devices.
