There have been a lot of strange incidents over the past months, where people abruptly lost control of themselves and acted on repressed desires, without regard for consequences. I'd like to provide an explanation for them.

When I arrived here, it was at the behest of a powerful and dangerous mage by the name of Masayoshi Shido. He wanted me to sabotage the school, and undermine the faith of both the students and the larger magical community in Daybreak's ability to manage and protect Candles. He wanted to weaken the school's image, in order to take over as the one in charge of overseeing the development of Flames.

He ordered this in complete awareness that such an upset would only hurt humanity's chances of overcoming Nightfall. His only priority was that he, and the people he deemed significant, survived and were able to continue leading their privileged lives. He believed himself to be a destined savior, but thought only a select few were worth saving, even if it meant turning his back on the masses.

I'm coming forward with this now because his conspiracy is finally undone. I told Daybreak's faculty of his schemes in October, and we were finally able to mount a covert counterattack at the end of last month. He wasn't alone in these plans, but his accomplices should be in too much disarray for a while to react effectively. I think I owe this explanation to everyone who's been affected by my actions, so I decided to say something now, while I have the breathing room.

This isn't a plea for forgiveness or mercy, I know everyone this matters to has every right to hate me. But I do hope you sleep a little better, knowing what happened and that there's no further chance of it happening again.

It was. I have the power to temporarily break the restraints on a person's heart, causing them to act in ways they'd normally think better of.

I've used it on a number of students, in my efforts to make the faculty look inadequate.

A power is not bad in itself. Only what it is used for. Having said that, they do tend to align.

So that's what all of those weird occurrences with people flying off the handle were caused by. Makes all too much sense now. Cognition's a hell of a thing.

...Glad we dealt with Shido. Knowing the full scope of it now makes me not regret for an instant going to help deal with him. His attitude hit... a little too close to home.

Not just cognition, though I can affect people directly by targeting their Shadows.

I think the term for people like Shido is 'fucking piece of work'.
None of this even touches on what he was doing before sending me here.
He'd rent me out to anyone with money and the right connections, who wanted to use my powers.
He treated sabotage and even assassination like a business.

Even that's too kind for someone like him.

He treated you worse than a pawn. More like some kind of attack dog. And for someone in his position, I find that beyond unforgivable. A change of heart was the justice he deserved.

...Hopefully it's the justice that can give you closure along with your freedom too. Even if it takes awhile.

I've had this hanging over my head for the past three years, so having that weight off...
I keep feeling like I'm going to wake up and find out that the entire mission was all just a dream.

He took requests from all over the world, so long as I could gain access to the target in some way without being conspicuous.

Well, be careful. I find it extremely unlikely that my father doesn't have contacts with methods far less subtle than Shido's, and he'll be quite angry with you for your role in his downfall. You didn't hear this from me.

Sorry, but I survived the mission and I don't think Shido's accomplices are going to be organized enough to kill me here.
If you want me to suffer or die, you'll probably have to do it yourself.
I can't argue about being a tool, though, since that's exactly how he saw me.

Mm. I suppose I should say that something like this takes bravery, but to my eyes, this seems much more like self-flagellation.

Though I had no idea it had supernatural graspings, I'm not surprised that the organization set up by that man could be so easily toppled by such a simple thing. They were morons, after all - ones who couldn't even see the gaps and shaking in their own foundations.

If they'd bothered taking my advice, then I assume it would have worked out much differently. ...Ah, well - Their loss, and they were pitiful enough to apparently include children in their dealings. I'm glad to see I was correct in assuming that it would collapse within the decade.

There are reasons I had confidence in my ability to become important to Shido, and it wasn't because he seemed intelligent.
I just didn't expect the huge fucking criminal conspiracy behind a politician with a bad reputation.

But it does say something that a teenager was able to gather as much evidence against them as I did.
Not to mention that he was enough of an idiot to send me here, and assume I'd stay cowed by him while somewhere he didn't have half the administration and staff in his pocket.
