I don't understand. People were throwing the potions on purpose. Which means they wanted the merges to happen. Is being pranked not a part of the game?

"Pranking" by its very nature, means that the person being pranked isn't in on it. It's a game for the people doing the throwing, not so much for the people getting hit.

Some students made them hold up a free hugs sign. They didn't know if they were doing April fools right. I didn't know either so I said it was about pranks which are things that are fun? Like a game. And that hugs were fun so it was a prank. So they maybe didn't know they were supposed to be annoyed even though they looked really uncomfortable. And now they think they're supposed to be pranked.
